The Great Schism was the fourth crusade. During this crusade, the crusaders (who were Christians) from the west attacked Constantinople's Christians and other citizens. They did this because Constantinople was rich and had many goods such as gold. The sacking of Constantinople caused the east to split from the west and the Pope in 1054. During the Great Schism, there were two Popes (one for the east and one for the west).

The Pope for the West was Patriarch Michael Cerulius and the Pope for the East was Pope Leo IX. When they attacked Constantinople, they did it so randomly that Constantinople was not ready for it and the East Europeans were able to kill many people. When they split the East Europeans refused to trade, buy from, or sell anything to the West and the West did the same to the East. When this happened the West became the Greek (or Eastern) Orthodox and the East stayed the Roman Catholics.

The religion of the Greek Orthodoxy's and the Roman Catholics are very similar but have some differences. A few of their similarities include that they are both Christian, both monotheistic, and both believe in Jesus. Some differences are that the Eastern Orthodoxy's have nothing to do with the pope. The Greek Orthodoxy's priests can also be married while Roman Catholics can't. One final difference is the immaculate perception. The immaculate perception is that the Virgin Mary has no sin.

When the Roman Catholics arrived back from Constantinople, Pope Leo IX gave them money, land, and they were freed from the Manor system. Because they were freed from Manors, towns were able to form and be safe. This helped get England out of the feudal system and out of the "dark ages".
